Frank Lloyd Wright Collection®
Liberty Magazine Cover framed Tiles

While the magazine never published the covers, several of the designs have become popular examples of Wright's abstract work, quite a departure from his usual linear designs.

One of the most famous of the cover designs was March Balloons. Perhaps the design was inspired by the earlier use of balloons in the 1912 Coonley Playhouse windows and the subsequent graphic wall designs for 1914 Midway Gardens. The balloon design element remained with Wright; it is seen again in the carpet design of his 1952 house for son David Wright in Phoenix. This 8" polychromatic Motawi Tile is taken from the March Balloon cover for Liberty Magazine.

Perhaps the most famous of the cover designs was May Basket. A series of triangles set at 45 degrees to the horizontal and vertical accented with circular designs without relationship to the geometric. It is thought Wright was inspired by the Maypole celebrations at Hillside Home School run by his aunts. This 8" polychromatic Motawi Tile is taken from the May Basket cover for Liberty Magazine.

Frozen Spheres: Here the circle is superimposed over a 60 degree grid with opposing 60 degree grids forming equilateral triangles and diamond shapes all over a subordinate rectangular grid. Thought to have been inspired by Taliesin in winter: "I wanted a home where icicles by invitation might beautify the eaves. So there were no gutters... Prismatic crystal pendants sometimes six feet long glittered between the landscape and the eyes inside. Taliesin in winter was a frosted palace roofed and walled with snow, hung with iridescent fringes..." Frank Lloyd Wright. This 8" polychromatic Motawi Tile is taken from the December Frozen Spheres cover for Liberty Magazine.
