Firstly, Medicine Bluff is a 310 ft high cliff overlooking Medicine Creek outside of Lawton, OK near Ft Sill which is 85 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. This Unique Landmark is at the eastern end of the Wichita Mountains held in deep reverence by the Indian tribes of this area from time immemorial. Geronimo is buried nearby.|
John Beasley, born in Illinois, became an full time artist for Hallmark Cards. Subsequently a design and sculpting artist, his job was exported in 2002. Along with his partner, now wife Debbie, in 2001 John had begun to devote his attention to making tiles and transitioning from cast stone to ceramic in the process.
Starting out on the front porch of their home in southwest Oklahoma near Medicine Bluff, the operation grew from the porch to the spare bedroom and then the living room to the extent they could barely walk thru their home. So they had to rent a building and off they were into the wonderful world of hand-made tiles.
John designs and creates every tile in his studio. Using a time honored method of pressing wet clay into a plaster mold made from his original sculpture, the clay tile is then bisque fired to make a durable piece of artwork. That is followed by glaze decoration and at least fired one more time. Each tile goes through many stages using multiple techniques to achieve the look Medicine Bluff Tile is becoming known for.
Every tile is made from one of Johnís original intricate sculpture designs in the Medicine Bluff Studio now in Cincinnati. From hand pressing each tile by hand, the focus is making affordable fine art tiles. And each design has a meaning behind it, sometimes quirky and sometimes inspirational.
Johnís wife 'is the brains behind the studio' making sure everything runs smoothly and allows John time to do new designs. Together they say they are "very fortunate to be doing what we love".
We are happy to introduce Medicine Bluff Tiles which will be popular for both tile and bird lovers!
Of particular note, all the Medicine Bluff Tiles are 3-dimensional which is somewhat hard to see on a 2-dimensional PC screen. Pressed from Johnís 3-dimensional sculptures, the birds look ready to jump right off the frame.
