Mimbreño is a dinnerware pattern jointly commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad and Fred Harvey who managed the railroad’s luxurious dining cars. The design was inspired by the thousand year old pottery art of the ancient Mimbres Valley tribes of Southwestern New Mexico. Adapted by Indian Art expert Mary Colter, the design became the exclusive dinnerware pattern on the 1936 Super Chief, the Santa Fe Railroad’s premiere passenger train that connected Chicago with Los Angeles.

The Maroon color was used by the railroad but a Black version subsequently became the dining room dinnerware for the El Tovar Hotel on the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

Indian lore was popular during the original Arts & Crafts Movement of the early 1900’s. The Arts & Crafts movement preached that hand-crafted products were superior in quality to machine made. This philosophy brought beautiful Indian hand-woven baskets and blankets into the early American Bungalow. Additionally Edward Curtis’ 40,000 photographs of 80 vanishing Indian tribes documented the America West during the early 1900’s
